emo is sadness, rage, and pain

Posted on May 23, 2007

Wow. Please watch this video, because you or someone you know may be emo. Did you know that emo is a teen phenomena that involves self-mutilation and suicide. Emo has come out of the internet. This video will help you identify emo. Here are some warning signs:

  • Black clothing and hair
  • Girl’s pants
  • Listening to Death Cab for Cutie
  • Advanced emo kids cut themselves

How does this stuff make it on the air? Luckily the school counselor they interviewed actually seemed to be sane. I think I am only remedial emo. I should study harder.

Sunday: Lunch at Big Jim’s: We wanted to go to Old Virginia Fried Chicken, but we forgot they went the Chick-Fil-A route and started closing on Sundays. We decided to go to Big Jim’s instead. We ordered a philly steak and a pulled pork sandwich. The philly steak was exactly what one would expect: nothing exceptional, but it got the job done. The pulled pork was disappointing, especially for a place called Big Jim’s BBQ. Next time I’ll go back to the burger. I know that’s good.

Tuesday: Lunch at Just Curry: They had lamb! Unfortunately, it did not live up to the Just Curry standards that I’m used to. The curry itself was really good, but the lamb was way overcooked. It was really dry and very tough. What really stung is that they were only selling it as a large for $10. I’ll give the lamb one more shot if they have it again, only because Just Curry’s stellar performance up until now has earned them the benefit of the doubt.

Dinner at O’neils: Blah, blah, blah… Mushroom and Swiss Cheeseburger… blah… Blue Moon… blah… unbelievably delicious Homemade Potato Chips… blah… so inexpensive.

Wednesday: Lunch at Amigos: I love the Amigos on 5th Street by the Food Lion. I do not share that love for the Amigos on the corner. In fact, I question whether they are even owned by the same people. The menu items are different, the rice is different, and so many other things. I ordered the Speedy Gonzales and was sorely disappointed. The tortilla was soggy, the beans were tasteless, and everything tasted kind of old. Lunch at Amigos was an experiment, and it failed. Amigos on 5th for me!

Thursday: Dinner at Mamma Zu: My favorite restaurant in Virginia! I’ve written about Mamma Zu before. In my mind, they can do no wrong. We started with the Broccoletti, which is really rabe broccoli, which has more to do with mustard greens than broccoli. They saute it in olive oil and tons of garlic and serve it with pine nuts and lemon wedges. Drizzle a little balsamic on there, and it’s pretty much the perfect appetizer. It’s a huge plate, but I could eat it all myself. For an entree, I unsurprisingly ordered the pork chops. Two thick cut bone in chops stuffed with garlic and rosemary served in a brown wine reduction sauce on top of white beans. This dish has never not been perfect. Until Mamma Zu, the best pork chop I ever had was my first pork chop senior year of high school. Mamma Zu wins now. Friends ordered the jumbo shrimp pasta, lamb sausage, and cuttlefish. The jumbo shrimp was a bunch of shrimp served with a light garlic cream sauce. At $19, it was way overpriced. The lamb sausage was really good, but the flavor was so robust, we could only handle it in small doses. We ended up leaving a couple of links behind since we couldn’t take anymore of it. The cuttlefish was also really good, but once again, the portion was so huge, we couldn’t finish. Finally, I got a cannoli, which was heavenly. Considerate it a must-order if you ever make it out to Richmond.

Friday: Lunch at Himalayan Fusion: When I first wrote about Himalayan Fusion, I wasn’t too impressed, but very optimistic. Subsequent visits (which unfortunately happened while I wasn’t writing) confirmed my optimism, and I was very excited to have an Indian restaurant in town that I looked forward to going to. Unfortunately, this week was pretty disappointing. All of the food tasted rushed. Most of the curries were too watery and obviously didn’t spend enough time simmering before they brought them out. The biggest offender was the Chicken Tikka. It was runny, and something about the flavor was just wrong. All of the problems with the food were buffet related. I still haven’t eaten off their ala carte menu, but I think it’s time to make that a priority. I do have to commend them for putting carrot halwa on the buffet. Frankly, the American palate finds most Indian deserts very off putting, and I would put carrot halwa at the top of that list. Carrot halwa is essentially boiled carrots, milk, butter, and sugar all mashed together. Putting it on the buffet is a bold act, and I commend them for that. I thought it was delicious.

Saturday: Dinner from Asian Express: My parents we driving in and arriving past 10:00, so I placed a big order from Asian Express to have waiting for them when they came in. Kung Pao Chicken, Chicken with String Beans, General Tso’s Chicken, Shrimp with Black Bean Sauce, Veggie Lo Mein, Veggies with Garlic Sauce, Schezuan Beans, and a little sashimi for me. I would never expect Chinese delivery, especially in Charlottesville, to be especially good. For what it is, though, I think that you’d be hard pressed to do better than Asian Express. I order through CampusFood.com, and it is awesome. You can pay for your order and tip with credit card, and I love that I can actually write out my special requests rather than trying to communicate them over the phone. They’ve never got an order wrong, and we have a lot of special requests.

Except for Mamma Zu, it was a pretty disappointing week. You win some, you lose some.

Monday: Lunch at Arch’s: The Arch’s on the corner sells sandwiches and salads for lunch. They are very expensive. I don’t remember the name of the salad I ordered, but it had chicken on it. It was very heavily processed chicken. They looked and tasted like McDonalds Chicken McNuggets with the breading pulled off and then the insides cut into small pieces. The rest of the salad was decent, but for what I spent on that salad, I was pissed. This marks my last lunch at Arch’s. Ugh, I’m so disappointed that I think it turned me off their fro-yo, despite the fact they put crack in it.

Tuesday: Lunch at Take It Away: I switched it up and got the hummus on onion rye with sprouts and mustard. Another damn fine sandwich. The best work to describe their hummus is “concentrated”. The flavor is unbelievably rich. Also, when you’re there, be sure to try the pomegranate soda made by G.U.S. (Grown Up Soda) in their fridge. It is phenomenal. If there is only one left, please leave it for me. Thanks!

Tuesday: Dinner at Crozet Pizza: Mmmmm… Crozet Pizza. My favorite pizza experiences are have the same ingredients: a pizzeria in an older building, new york style thin crust pizza with at least sausage and peppers, and pitchers of cheap beer. In Birmingham it was New York Pizza, in Nashville it was Pizza Perfect, and around here, it’s Crozet Pizza. Unfortunately they don’t do pitchers, but cheap PBR in plastic cups is a good approximation. We ordered a couple of pizzas, and my favorite by far was one of their specials with sausage and peppers that we added roasted garlic to. Stinky and delicious. I ate way too much.

Wednesday: Lunch at Bodo’s: I ordered the usual: avocado sandwich with onions, horseradish, and mustard on everything wheat. This is the most refreshing sandwich that I get to order on a consistent basis. My only complaint is that I’m always hungry two hours later.

Thursday: Lunch at Lee’s Grill: Chicken teriyaki. ‘Nuff said.

Thursday: Dinner from Mona Lisa: Thursday nights are TV night. Unfortunately we all were not feeling up to making dinner, so Rob and Michael picked up a pan of lasagna and a pizza from Mona Lisa. Stick them in the oven, and a half hour later you have a delicious dinner that tastes as good as anything you could make yourself. I definitely owe them a more detailed review, which I’ll do in the future. For now, put them at the top of your list if you feel like eating out but staying in.

Friday: Dinner at Cocina del Sol: It sucks to be one of our friends. When we went to Crozet Pizza last Tuesday, Michael really wanted to go to Cocina del Sol because he’d never been there before. We overruled him and went to Crozet Pizza. Then on Friday, Michael decides to go out of town cause one of his other friends got home from the Peace Corps… Whoopdeeshit. Anyway, the rest of us decided that Michael was dead to us, so we went to Cocina del Sol. And took pictures. And made a montage. And added music. And uploaded it to YouTube. By the way, we actually didn’t order the nachos pictured in the montage. We took a picture of somebody else’s because Michael’s favorite food is nachos. They do look pretty damn good.

The food is tasty. Not quite Mexican, but not Tex-Mex either. I got the Mole Enchiladas, and the sauce is really thick, rich, and chocolatey. Everybody else loved their food and margaritas also. There’s really not much to dislike about this place. It’s got a really laid back vibe… service is a little slow, but not in a bad way. It actually suits the place. Christopher Alexander would say it possesses the quality without a name.

Arch’s aside, this was an incredible last week in food. I should be all caught up in the next couple of days. Enjoy!

Monday: Lunch at Aromas: I’ve heard about Aromas for all of the last four years I’ve been in Charlottesville, and I’ve wanted to go badly… really, really badly. For some reason, though, I never remember. Well I was driving home from the post office this afternoon, and when I turned on to Fontaine, I finally remembered. It looks like a miniature cafeteria on the inside. Dishes are Mediterranean inspired. I think I remember seeing Falafel and Schwarmas. I ordered the Casablanca Angus Tenderloin Sausage Sandwich. It was your typical wrap notable for it’s very, very fresh veggies. The sausage itself was delicious. I’m not sure if they make it themselves or not, but it’s very well seasoned and juicy while still being fairly lean. I’m a big fan, and hopefully I’ll remember to go back some day.

Monday: Snack at Old Virginia Fried Chicken: I just grabbed a chicken thigh for a snack. I’ve definitely warmed up to this place over the last year. Of course, that could be because I haven’t had Food of All Nations’ fried chicken in ages.

Tuesday: Dinner at O’Neills: Mushroom and Swiss Burger, Blue Moon, and Homemade Potato Chips. Hey, it’s deja vu.

Wednesday: Lunch at Wayside: Like I said, I’m warming up to the place. It’s also warming up outside, which I think makes the smell carry further and stronger. I can’t help but be drawn in by it. I had a three piece meal with potato salad and mac & cheese. Their mac & cheese is definitely a winner. It’s really not creamy, which makes it sound bad, but they make it work in an awesome way.

Friday: Lunch at Just Curry: I had the chicken curry. Of all their curries, I think it is the weakest. It’s really good, but I inevitably compare it to their butter chicken, and the butter chicken is far superior (and will probably contribute to my premature death). I know I said it last week, but Just Curry is phenomenal. Expect to hear about it every week.

Friday: Dinner at Amigo’s: I had the Chili Verde… always the Chili Verde. They never get this dish wrong. The pork is always tender and the sauce is always spicy and tangy. Delicious.
