last week in food (4/29 - 5/5)

Monday: Lunch at Arch’s: The Arch’s on the corner sells sandwiches and salads for lunch. They are very expensive. I don’t remember the name of the salad I ordered, but it had chicken on it. It was very heavily processed chicken. They looked and tasted like McDonalds Chicken McNuggets with the breading pulled off and then the insides cut into small pieces. The rest of the salad was decent, but for what I spent on that salad, I was pissed. This marks my last lunch at Arch’s. Ugh, I’m so disappointed that I think it turned me off their fro-yo, despite the fact they put crack in it.

Tuesday: Lunch at Take It Away: I switched it up and got the hummus on onion rye with sprouts and mustard. Another damn fine sandwich. The best work to describe their hummus is “concentrated”. The flavor is unbelievably rich. Also, when you’re there, be sure to try the pomegranate soda made by G.U.S. (Grown Up Soda) in their fridge. It is phenomenal. If there is only one left, please leave it for me. Thanks!

Tuesday: Dinner at Crozet Pizza: Mmmmm… Crozet Pizza. My favorite pizza experiences are have the same ingredients: a pizzeria in an older building, new york style thin crust pizza with at least sausage and peppers, and pitchers of cheap beer. In Birmingham it was New York Pizza, in Nashville it was Pizza Perfect, and around here, it’s Crozet Pizza. Unfortunately they don’t do pitchers, but cheap PBR in plastic cups is a good approximation. We ordered a couple of pizzas, and my favorite by far was one of their specials with sausage and peppers that we added roasted garlic to. Stinky and delicious. I ate way too much.

Wednesday: Lunch at Bodo’s: I ordered the usual: avocado sandwich with onions, horseradish, and mustard on everything wheat. This is the most refreshing sandwich that I get to order on a consistent basis. My only complaint is that I’m always hungry two hours later.

Thursday: Lunch at Lee’s Grill: Chicken teriyaki. ‘Nuff said.

Thursday: Dinner from Mona Lisa: Thursday nights are TV night. Unfortunately we all were not feeling up to making dinner, so Rob and Michael picked up a pan of lasagna and a pizza from Mona Lisa. Stick them in the oven, and a half hour later you have a delicious dinner that tastes as good as anything you could make yourself. I definitely owe them a more detailed review, which I’ll do in the future. For now, put them at the top of your list if you feel like eating out but staying in.

Friday: Dinner at Cocina del Sol: It sucks to be one of our friends. When we went to Crozet Pizza last Tuesday, Michael really wanted to go to Cocina del Sol because he’d never been there before. We overruled him and went to Crozet Pizza. Then on Friday, Michael decides to go out of town cause one of his other friends got home from the Peace Corps… Whoopdeeshit. Anyway, the rest of us decided that Michael was dead to us, so we went to Cocina del Sol. And took pictures. And made a montage. And added music. And uploaded it to YouTube. By the way, we actually didn’t order the nachos pictured in the montage. We took a picture of somebody else’s because Michael’s favorite food is nachos. They do look pretty damn good.

The food is tasty. Not quite Mexican, but not Tex-Mex either. I got the Mole Enchiladas, and the sauce is really thick, rich, and chocolatey. Everybody else loved their food and margaritas also. There’s really not much to dislike about this place. It’s got a really laid back vibe… service is a little slow, but not in a bad way. It actually suits the place. Christopher Alexander would say it possesses the quality without a name.

Arch’s aside, this was an incredible last week in food. I should be all caught up in the next couple of days. Enjoy!
