last week in food (8/12 - 8/18)

Sunday: Beer and Appetizers at McGrady’s: This season, Sunday means kickball, and kickball means McGrady’s. As the kickball sponsors, we get $4 pitchers of Yuengling and $1 off appetizers for showing up in our team shirts. McGrady’s has some of the best bar food in Charlottesville. As Elizabeth can attest, McGrady’s knows how to fry things. Unfortunately, the one exception is their wings, which just aren’t up to snuff. They are small, and the sauces are fairly disappointing. At 10 for $2.50, though, I still order them every now and then.

Tuesday: Lunch at Revolutionary Soup: Another RevSoup visit, another Gulf Coast Shrimp Salad. This one did not match up to the one I had two weeks ago. The lettuce was wilted, they forgot the roasted red peppers, and the eggs and avocado felt like they’d been sitting out awhile. I was really sad after this meal.

Wednesday: Lunch at Just Curry: Just Curry appears to have finally found a steady supplier of goat and lamb. An added bonus is that you can now pay a $2 premium with your curry card for these dishes. I had the goat, and while it’s been overdone in the past, today it was moist and tender. I also got a nice big chop in there wth a juicy piece of marrow that pretty much made my day.

Thursday: Lunch at Take It Away: I didn’t get the corned beef! Instead, I got the chicken salad with sprouts. The salad consists of fairly large chunks of chicken in a creamy sauce that doesn’t taste too mayonaissey. I normally specificaly ask for “a ridiculous amount of spicy mustard”, and they rarely meet my expectations. Today they did. My sinuses were burning through the whole meal. It was awesome. I’ll probably toss this sandwich into rotation with the corned beef.

Friday: Dinner at Miller’s: Rob and I split the fried appetizer sampler and a french dip. The fried stuff was OK, but obviously was fried from frozen. The french dip was disappointing. It was a huge roll with a way too small amount of thin, dry roast beef. When will I learn not to order food at Miller’s.
