last week in food (10/14 - 10/20)

Monday: Lunch at Vita Nova: After reading this thread at cVillain, I decided it was time to check out Vita Nova. I’d gone in intending to get a slice, but I was drawn to their inexpensive lunch pasta options. I got spaghetti and meatballs. While they were nothing unique, they were very, very solid. I’ll definitely be going back. Maybe I’ll try a slice sometime, too.

Monday: Dinner at Wild Wing Cafe: I used to like Wild Wing Cafe a lot more. I still like the atmosphere more, but I find the quality of the wings to be much higher at Buffalo Wild Wings. BW3 also has Mango Habanero, which is the greatest wing sauce ever made. Despite all that, Wild Wing Cafe is still not bad. Kate and I split the twenty-five wing sampler. We got Italian, Garlic, Teriyaki, Dragon, and whatever the hottest one is called. I was most impressed by Italian and Dragon. I really wish their hot went hotter.

Tuesday: Lunch at Revolutionary Soup: I’ve spoken about the Gulf Coast Salad at length, so I won’t go into it more here. I will say that it was a disappointment at the downtown location. The lettuce was wilted and the avocados were brown. Not nearly as fresh as my past experiences. I don’t know if this was a one time thing or indicative of the downtown location. I also had lamb soup which was average. Finally, I had a chocolate chip cookie, and it was exceptional. I’d rank it the best chocolate chip cookie on the downtown mall.

Thursday: Amigos for lunch: Can you guess? Yup. Chili verde. Delicious.

Thursday: Drinks at Kiki: I normally wouldn’t mention drinks, but the ones at Kiki are too damn good. I had a grapefruit basil limeade and a mojito, and both were exceptional. I’ve heard rumors they weren’t doing so hot, and I’m hoping that isn’t the case. I’m making it a point to head over there more often just in case. You should too.

Thursday: Dinner at Escafe: Escafe has been on my list of places I will no longer go to. It was a tough decision, because when I moved to Charlottesville, it was one of my favorite places. I’m not sure what happened, but the quality of the food went downhill pretty quickly. Our friends chose it tonight, and we were lured by the promise of an all new menu. I was cautiously optimistic. I really wanted Escafe to return to their former glory. Unfortunately, they failed. I don’t even remember what I ordered. It was mediocre, and that was the consensus around the table. The only thing that saved the night is the bartender still remembered how to make my favorite drink off their old menu: the King James Version. I believe it’s essentially a Gin Mojito. It was perfect. I’m a sucker for mint.

Friday: Lunch at St. Maarten’s: I ordered what is called a Fajita on the menu. It’s actually some grilled chicken in a tortilla with some veggies. I would not order it again. Stick with the burgers and fried stuff at Maarten’s.
